For an NBA rookie just drafted out of whatever collegiate, prep, or overseas ball club they had been playing for prior, life can come at you fast. And such was the case for new Boston forward Dillon Mitchell as he began to get settled with the Boston Celtics after they drafted him out of St. John's with the 40th overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft.
The Tampa, Florida native opened up about the jump from the NCAA ranks to the pros after helping the Sin City Celtics eke out a win vs, the Summer Toronto Raptors in Boston's first game of the NBA's annual Nevada-based exhibition series. "Fast, but just enjoying it," said Mitchell via CLNS Media when asked what his last few weeks had been like
"You go through 16 workouts during the pre-draft process," he added. "You get a call, and you're on your way to Boston, and it's straight to work."
"So it was pretty fast, but (I've) just (been) loving it," said the Celtics' sole pick of the second round. "You can't complain. You're grateful, blessed to be here, and continue to get to work every day." And as for what's next with the Summer Celtics, Mitchell already has shifted his focus to the team. "I think playing together, learning how to play together still," he explained.
"We're all still new. We only had about a week of trying to get together. But I think the biggest thing for us is competing. We went down yesterday and we kept fighting, kept guarding until our offense could catch up. So I think going out there and competing and being together, I think that's the biggest thing for us."
