In conjunction with the United States celebrating its 250th birthday this year, USA Today Co. newspapers in Michigan have been looking at some of the top athletes to come out of each region in the state.
Over the coming days, the Lansing State Journal will unveil some of the top athletes to come out of Greater Lansing. We will take a daily look at one of the top 10 male or female athletes from the region. These athletes are determined by more than just high school performance. Accomplishments in college and as a professional were also taken into consideration when determining the area's best.

The athletes are not ranked in order. Here is a look at our latest male athlete.
Jay Vincent
The Eastern graduate is among the most decorated basketball players produced by Lansing. That success started during a high school career when he scored 1,512 points. More success followed at Michigan State where Vincent was a member of the 1979 national championship squad and was twice the Big Ten scoring champion. He averaged 22.1 points in the 1979-80 season and 24.1 points in 1980-81 to lead the Big Ten. Vincent was an All-American as a senior and finished his MSU career with 1,914 points (seventh in Spartans history) en route to having his No. 31 jersey retired by the program.
Vincent went on to play nine seasons in the NBA after being taken with the No. 24 pick in the 1981 draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while appearing in 576 career games.
