Cavs' Kyrie Irving trade idea makes absolutely no sense originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are still going after LeBron James in free agency.
With that in mind, a new trade idea from Bleacher Report suggests that the Cavs should trade for Kyrie Irving from the Dallas Mavericks.
The thinking, of course, is that Irving would help entice James to return and run back their previous success in Cleveland.
But the suggested trade doesn't make much sense at all:

The Cavs downgrade at center from Jarrett Allen to Daniel Gafford in this deal.
There's also nothing that really says Irving is definitively better than Harden at this point -- especially when availability is accounted for.
If this was truly the only way to land LeBron, you'd have to change the overall math on this equation.
But if James would be happy to come play with Harden (and Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley) and Allen, then there's no reason for Cleveland to even consider trading for Irving after his most recent injury struggles.
Nostalgia is a powerful drug, but the James-Irving partnership -- at least via a bulky, complex trade like that one -- wouldn't make much short- or long-term sense for the Cavaliers.
