St. Mary Catholic Central is a football team without a home.
For many years, the Falcons have rented Navarre Field in Monroe to play its home games.
Monroe Public Schools, which had owned the historic site since 1927, sold the property in February. The stands there have been razed.
SMCC has plans to build its own field on the site of the old Boysville facility off Nadeau Rd., but that won’t be completed for at least a couple of years.

So, the school is depending on the kindness of neighbors this fall.
Two of the Falcons’ four “home” games will be played at Gibraltar Carlson. Erie Mason and Ida are each hosting one.
“Ida was easy because I know all of those people,” said SMCC athletic director Jared Janssen, a former Ida coach. “(Superintendent) Kelli Tuller at Erie Mason has been awesome. We will be playing all of our JV games there. And Dan Kalbfleisch (Carlson’s AD) has been super accommodating. He really wanted to help. A lot of area schools have been really supportive.”
Monroe athletic director Chet Hesson also offered assistance, but SMCC’s games conflicted with Monroe’s schedule.
And one of SMCC’s non-league games will be a short trip.
The Falcons have agreed to play at Whiteford in its season opener on Aug. 28. The schools have never met before in football.
It almost happened last year in the state playoffs, but Whiteford stumbled in its opening-round contest.
“It will be a great game,” Janssen said. “You can’t get a better game 30 minutes away. We opened with Clinton the last two years, but the contract expired. We had played each other five times in three years. It was time to try something else.”
SMCC might run into the same thing with Whiteford.
They annually are two of the top Division 7 teams in Michigan. A playoff battle this seaosn is a strong possibility.
Janssen doesn’t believe his school will be forced to lean on neighbors for a place to play football games for too much longer. Money is being raised for the new field.
“Nothing ever moves as fast as you would like, but losing Navarre sped up the process,” he said.
SMCC will face changes in 2027 as the school moves out of the Huron League and into the Detroit Catholic League.
The future on the Monroe-Bedford rivalry is in limbo with the Southeastern Conference expands next year.
Plans call for them to be in different divisions for football, so their meeting on Sept. 18 this season for Bedford’s homecoming could be their last clash on the gridiron for a while.
Bedford has changed two of its non-league games for its first season under former Monroe coach Dave Mifsud.
Road trips to Clyde (Ohio) on Sept. 12 and Grand Ledge on Oct. 23 replace games last season against Mansfield (Mass.) and Detroit Cass Tech.
Whiteford, Summerfield and Erie Mason have a bit schedule shift with Sand Creek replacing Ottawa Hills in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. The circuit has been renamed the Great Lakes Conference.
The other league members are Ohio schools Edon, Montpellier, Powers North Central and West Unity Hilltop.
League games will be played in the last seven weeks of the season.
“It is a wonderful thing that these eight schools have come together to create schedule stability and hopefully competitiveness for the smaller football schools in Michigan and Ohio along the border,” Whiteford coach Todd Thieken said.
Whiteford will play Pewamo Westphalia, which lost in the state semifinals last year, in Week 2.
Mason has two new non-league opponents: Blissfield on Aug. 28 and Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology on Sept. 3.
Here are the other schedule changes in 2006 for Region schools.
Airport: Playing Southgate Anderson in Week 9 instead of Auburn Hills Avondale.
Ida: Opens with Redford Union at home and finishes with Pinckney, replacing Grosse Ile and Birch run on the schedule.
