The June 1-7 Monroe County Region Athlete of the Week vote became another chapter in the great -Summerfield-Whiteford rivalry.

The top three finishers all came from those two schools.

Summerfield baseball player Josh Horak topped the pole with 14,818 votes.

Close behind was Whiteford softball player Avy Wood with 13,463.

Summerfield softball player Claire Franzen took third place with 3,102.


Airport softball player Julia Dyson was a distant fourth with 511. No one else made it to 100 votes.

It’s time to pick the winner for June 8-14. It’s a shorter list because the New Botson Huron girls soccer team and softball squads from Airport, Whiteford and Summerfield were the only teams still playing.

Polls will remain open through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17.

Here are this week’s candidates in alphabetical order:

Addeson Cousino, Whiteford softball: Collected three hits in the state quarterfinals.

Brooklyn Martin, Airport softball: Singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored a run in the state quarterfinals.

Brea Olmstead, Summerfield softball: Notched a pair of hits, including a home run, in the state quarterfinals.

Mia Samples, Summerfield softball: Delivered two hits in the state quarterfinals.

Miley Skamiera, New Boston Huron soccer: Set up her team’s lone goal in the state semifinals.

Olivia Tilley, Airport softball: Went 2-for-3 and scored a run in the state quarterfinals.

Avery Turk, New Boston Huron soccer: Scored her team’s lone goal in the state semifinals.
