Cards signed Horton before the lockout and couldn't possibly know how much or little time he'd have to train his players. Sitting on their hands wouldn't have been a better idea. What would you have done instead? Brought back Bill Davis to stink it up? With the lockout, our defense was going to suck this year regardless. Better to get a head start on their development for 2012 IMO.
Getting speed at the OLB position wouldn't hurt. If the Cards lose the Vikings game, which will inevitably lead to a 1-6 start, Whiz needs to sit Haggans and Porter. Acho and Schofield need to be forced into game action at that point, to gain as much experience as possible for next year.

It's about time.

Somers mentioned that the Giants were double teaming Scho last week. When was the last time an offense dedicated two blockers to Porter? A lot of the time, tight ends block him out of plays.

This is Bryan Robinson/Dan Williams all over again. Is it better to have a guy out of position on a couple of plays or to have a guy who's in the right place but ineffective 90% of the time he's on the field? Whis seems to side with the latter theory, which has led to this dubious honor:

So not only are we bad, we're old. The oldest, actually. It's time to let the young guys play through mistakes and develop some youth. The Porter to Scho transition is a good start.
But the coach does not believe in giving rookies a lot of time until they are ready learning on the side... he'd rather play over-the-hill grand daddy's.

C'mon now. You only get a window of time to get your players the playbook and everything before training camp. It was perfectly foreseeable that there weren't going to be OTAs and likely an abbreviated training camp (although TC only lost like a week).

Would we be any worse right now with Bill Davis than we currently are with Horton? I see little difference between the results, except that Calais Campbell, Darnell Dockett, Dan Williams, O'Brien Schofield, Adrian Wilson, and Kerry Rhodes looked like impact football players at least at times under Bill Davis, and right now they look like a bunch of children wandering in the wilderness.

I like how no one could've foreseen the lockout running into late July, but somehow you had the prescience to know that the defense was going to be bad "because of the lockout" somehow. The Lions' defense is looking pretty bad because of the lockout. As do the 49ers D.

God laughs when men make plans. Good seein' you out there, Sam Acho.

Too bad that we've apparently blown another draft pick on Schofield.

Haggans, Porter, Schofield, and Acho ALL combined for 2 tackles, COMBINED! That's absolutely ridiculous. I wish I could get paid millions of dollars to do absolutely nothing, must be nice.

<---Drama Queen.

That's right. Nothing to see here. It's not like we had a fierce pass rush or that Joey Porter got juked out of his jock and Schofield's gone from a guy who looked promising with no practice time last year to a guy who can't get on the field in even sub packages.

How's that evaluation of Cam Newton working out for you, Stout?

Haha, you kill me, K9. You've clearly put on your jerk pants again today. Not sure what the last sentence has to do with Schofield, but you are determined to act like a child, so you needed to do it (and I was wrong...yeah, I can admit things like that).

Schofield was busy learning the most difficult defense in the league, and was finally getting the hang of it...and then had to learn a completely different 3-4 (Davis ran something almost completely unrecognizable as the 3-4) in almost no time. Yes, you can blather about other players on other teams doing things in that time period, but it is asinine to call Schofield a bust at this point. You're getting all bent out of shape about people getting on Kolb's case, yet Schofield's a bust. Sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night, buddy.

(Insert random, childish insult here, as per the K9 rules of posting).

So Sam Acho was able to come in and practice well enough to get in the game with zero pro experience, but Schofield hasn't been on the field nearly as much because... his pro experience is a liability? Excellent reasoning there.

And of course calling me a "Drama Queen" has nothing to do with childish insults.

So "Stout <----------Drama Queen" means K9 is a drama queen?

Practice well enough to...what...come in and suck? Because that's what Acho did. Not sure how that relates to your point, as this coaching staff has proven time and again that they have no clue how to put the correct personnel in positions to succeed.

Drama Queen? Yeah--because you're mocking everyone for acting exactly like a drama queen about Kolb, and then you come into this thread like a drama queen about Schofield. So I guess I should have used hypocrite instead. Where's the difference in you doing exactly what you're taking other people to task over?

And yes, the name calling shall stop. I should have been above pointing out the obvious and I should definitely have couched it in civil terms.

Where am I mocking anyone for acting like a drama queen on Kolb? Kolb is playing exactly like I expected him to. I didn't think he was all that good when we got him, and he's failed to reach my expectations to this point.

When Whis and Horton tell the media that Schofield is going to get more playing time all week and then he fails to get much if any playing time during the game? Who's being the hypocrite? What changed between Thursday when the promises were being made and then Sunday when he was getting subbed out for a rookie?

It's amazing that this coaching staff has a reputation for not liking to play rookies, and then you look at the actions. 6th round rookie David Carter had exactly as many snaps as 1st rounder Dan Williams in the Seattle and New York games. Schofield is riding pine for 5th round rookie Sam Acho.

I certainly agree with all of this. This makes much more sense than labeling Schofield a bust. I think it's the coaching staff that's the bust, not Schofield. Heck, I wouldn't put it past CKW to tell Horton NOT to play Schofield. Wouldn't be the first idiotic thing our fearless HC has done.

I didn't label Schofield a "bust;" I said that he was a blown draft pick. Just like Dan Williams has been a blown draft pick because we're not playing him nearly enough. Dan Williams has been good when given the opportunity to play, just like Schofield has. But they can't show that when they're not on the field.

Rashad Johnson is a bust. Dude's had enough playing time to show that he should be able to do something, and hasn't done anything. Brandon Keith is seeming busty right about now. Cody Brown was a bust. It's just frustrating to use a good pick on what is seemingly a talented player and watch him sit around and do nothing.

This is the part that really blows my mind. We heard from several sources this week that Scho was going to get more playing time this week and I read an article where Horton called his learning curve since using the wristband has been "remarkable"... and then gameday comes and they play Acho in his spot?!

I don't know what kind of ridiculous psychology that is -- when I was a kid, if my parents said I would get a yummy dessert if I was good all day, and then I was good all day and when it was time for dessert they yelled at me to go to bed, I wouldn't be motivated to be good the next day. Granted, I don't know the circumstances, but why they just didn't say anything in the first place is beyond me if they weren't willing to give him the playing time come gameday.

Keep in mind that Scho was supposed to go in to provide a pass rush and the Vikings hardly passed the ball as they were up by 21 from the first Q on.

Acho is also extremely intelligent, so there's a pretty good chance he has a better grasp of the defense than Schofield does, since we all read the story on how he was having trouble picking it up. If Scho isn't getting decent playing time by midseason then I will officially start to worry. He would either have no idea what he is supposed to be doing or the coaches would still be blind to Porter's overall level of sucktitude. Both situations are not good. I don't get how he can barely get on the field in passing situations. Just call a play and tell him to go get the QB and see what happens. It's clear that Porter blows, might as well see what Scho can do.

Acho works the left side all year to back up Haggans and then gets put in the game on the right side to spell Porter? Unreal.

Of course we all know he needs at least 45 games to learn the system well enough to play to a high level on either side.

sounds about right... just in time for his rookie contract to end and for him to sign with someone else!
