Cardinals get brutal $40 million update after new TV deal with MLB originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The St. Louis Cardinals have been selling off a lot of their best players this offseason, with Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and most recently, Brendan Donovan all dealt away.
While Chaim Bloom is aiming for a rebuild, and the assets acquired for trading away these players are a plus, the departure of these players stings. But that is far from the worst news for the Cardinals this offseason.
According to Katie Woo and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Cardinals are getting some brutal news in the wake of their new TV deal with Major League Baseball. The updated TV revenue features a difference of $40 million, but in the wrong direction.
Cardinals get brutal $40 million TV revenue update
The Cardinals, along with a few other Major League teams, are leaving FanDuel Sports Network and will be under MLB's broadcasting umbrella this upcoming season.
"The move will result in a significant cut in television revenue," Woo and Sammon write. "Per a league source, the Cardinals are expected to see roughly $20 million in broadcast revenue this season, down significantly from the roughly $60 million they expected last year."
This is some brutal news for the Cardinals, as their revenue from their TV deal is down $40 million from what it was expected to be a year ago.
Dating back to their Bally Sports Network deal a few years ago, their expected revenue was $75 million, according to Josh Jacobs of Redbird Rants.

What this means is that the Cardinals, over the course of a few years, have lost roughly $55 million in TV revenue.
It's no wonder why they're entering a rebuild right now. Their players are older, expensive, and the team is working with a lot less money than they had years ago.
This rebuild won't be a simple one for the Cardinals, and the team's ever-changing TV deals are a big reason why things are not as great as they once were.
