Red Sox receive brutal 'biggest underachiever' label that's unfortunately accurate originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Boston Red Sox are sitting at the bottom of the American League East and are looking like one of the worst teams in the Majors this season.

With how things are going, it looks likely the Red Sox will be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. Overall, it's hard not to feel incredibly disappointed in the Red Sox this season.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller called the Red Sox the "biggest underachiever" of the entire MLB season. Unfortunately, this brutal description is accurate, as not even the New York Mets are bigger underachievers than the Red Sox this season.

Why Red Sox are 'biggest underachievers' of MLB season

"Overall Evaluation: Biggest Underachiever of All," Miller writes. It's a brutal description, but it's an accurate one for this Red Sox team.

Coming into the season, the Red Sox were viewed as a postseason contender, and while their offseason didn't go to plan, losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency, there was some optimism with the roster and the offseason moves.

Ranger Suarez, Caleb Durbin, Sonny Gray, and Willson Contreras were very exciting additions. All but Durbin have played well this season, and even Durbin is starting to get hot recently.

But, looking at the rest of the roster, it's hard not to feel like the Red Sox aren't the biggest underachievers in MLB this season.

MORE: Roman Anthony mightve been overhyped for Red Sox

Garrett Crochet had a 6.30 ERA before his IL stint, that's continued to last longer and longer as each update provides concerning news. Roman Anthony has been in a similar boat, as his own IL stint is lasting quite a while.

Add in struggles from Trevor Story, Jarren Duran, Marcelo Mayer, and Bryan Bello, and the Red Sox are a very disappointing team this season.

But, for a team that had plenty of hype coming into the year, the fall-off has made the Red Sox the biggest underachiever, even worse than the Mets, as almost nothing has gone right for the Red Sox during the 2026 season so far.

It's not just that the Red Sox are disappointing; it's that they've fallen well short of expectations. The Mets are 34-41, and very disappointing, but they don't compare to the massive change in tune around Boston amid a 30-43 start to 2026.
