Prior to beginning a four-game series in Cininnati on Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals, ironically, will be calling up one of the Reds' former top prospects.
27-year-old middle-infielder and outfielder José Barrero is being called up per a report from Francys Romero. As a result, infielder Thomas Saggese is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Memphis, and the Cardinals will need to make another move to open up space for Barrero on the 40-man roster.
Barreo was originally signed by Cincinnati to a minor league contract in June 2017. He spent six seasons in the Reds organization, making his MLB debut in 2020. In 139 career games with the Reds (2020-'23), Barrero hit just .186 with four home runs and 32 RBI to go with 163 strikouts.
Following a brief stint in the Texas Rangers farm system, the Cardinals signed the free agent to a minor league deal last November. Barrero looked impressive with the Cardinals in Spring Training, hitting .227 with two home runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases in 24 games.

At the time of his call up, he was in the midst of a 19-game-on-base streak with Triple-A Memphis, hitting .299 with four home runs and 14 RBI.
Despite slashing .341/.364/.512 in 44 plate appearances with the big league club this season, the Cardinals are optioning Saggese to Triple-A in an attempt to get him more playing time according to MLB.com's John Denton.
Right-hander Andre Pallante (2-1, 4.05 ERA) takes the mound as the Cardinals begin their four-game set with the Reds Monday night.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. CT.
