Canadian national team captain Alphonso Davies has conceded that his FIFA World Cup campaign will have to wait as he continues to recover from yet another hamstring injury.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury during Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with reigning UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the tournament’s semi-final in April, representing the latest in a series of setbacks suffered by the left back in what have been two injury-laden seasons in Germany.

While Davies recently joined up with his Canadian teammates, he sat out of their 2-0 friendly win against Uzbekistan, and it seems that not only will he miss their upcoming final pre-World Cup friendly against Ireland on Friday, but his stint on the sidelines will drag on into the tournament itself.

“You can't really rush these injuries. It already happened three times in a row now,” Davies said on ‘The Sid Seixeiro Show.’ “So, you know, after a big ACL injury, I think those are the kind of things you can't really rush.

“Yeah, of course, I want to play in the World Cup. Of course, I want to play in front of the country and my family, friends, and help the team as much as I can. But yet again, there's some things as a footballer you have to realize, especially injuries that happen back-to-back-to-back, you can't really rush them.

“I mean, the best thing you can do, sometimes you have to sacrifice. I mean, obviously, the first game of the tournament it won't be possible. But let's see what happens the second, third, maybe if we make it out of the group stage. Let's see what happens.

“It all depends on my rehab, and how my body reacts to the treatment, and how quickly I can heal, and obviously, as healthy as possible, and not, you know, not risking anything.”

Jesse Marsch’s Canadian side, drawn into Group B, will first take on Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12, followed by Qatar a week later, and finally Switzerland on June 24. The World Cup co-hosts, alongside the U.S. and Mexico, will look to finish in the top two of their group to automatically qualify for the Round of 32, although a third-place finish may also be enough to continue, with the top eight third-placed teams set to move forward.

Asked specifically about the Bosnia game, Davies added, “No, it will not be possible. I hate to say it. It hurts me to say, but that's the reality of injuries.

“I mean, I want to play, of course, I always want to play with my national team and especially in a home World Cup, but we have to face reality that it won't be able, it won't be possible.”

Davies may be understandably disappointed, but Marsch is keen to give him as much time as he needs to get back to full fitness before returning to the field, confident that at the end of the day he will be successful.

“What we don't want to do is put him in a situation to suffer again and to be vulnerable again,” he said, via ESPN. “You can imagine that he wants to build up his body and trust his body in all ways, so that he can go out and play football and do the things he loves.

“So we're gonna make sure that as a staff that we do a good job of really looking at him every single day, monitoring every single day, and putting him in position to succeed, and I'm sure we will.”
