Former Duke teammates and roommates Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel have gone back and forth in this year's NBA Rookie of the Year race.
Although Flagg is scoring more points, Knueppel has showcased great efficiency despite shooting at a high volume.
After recent scoring outbursts, Flagg is averaging over 21 points per game to go along with 6.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. As for Knueppel, he's averaging just under 19 points per game to go along with 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists. That said, Knueppel is leading the league in three-pointers made (265) while shooting 43.1% from three-point range.
It's also worth mentioning that Knueppel has played 12 more games than Flagg.
Given their tremendous rookie campaigns, is it possible for both players to win the award?
Actually, yes.
Although it's uncommon, there have been four NBA seasons in which two players took home the award.
It first happened in the 1951-52 season when Mel Hutchins and Bill Tosheff tied, then again in the 1970-71 season when Dave Cowens and Geoff Petrie shared the award.
More recently, it happened twice since the 1990s when Jason Kidd and another former Blue Devil, Grant Hill, shared the award after the 1994-95 season.
Elton Brand and Steve Francis were the most recent duo to win the award following the 1999-2000 season.
Considering the race between the two Duke stars is tremendously close, could the two end up tying?
