As we wrap up our coverage of the 2025-26 basketball season and the ongoing search for North Carolina’s next head coach, we continue our player reviews.
Next up is the freshman sensation himself, Caleb Wilson. Wilson was tremendous from start to finish as he led the Tar Heels in nearly every major category. He was a consensus second-team All-American and first-team All-ACC selection
Here is a breakdown of Wilson’s potentially only season as a member of the Tar Heels.
2025-26 stats: 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists per game, 57.8 percent field goal shooting and 59.0 effective field percentage in 24 games
Wilson was one of the best players in college basketball. He led UNC in scoring at 19.8 points per game and rebounding at 9.4 per game. He also averaged 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks, both team highs. Wilson recorded 17 20-point games, the most by a freshman in program history, and 11 double-doubles, tied for the second most by a freshman in program history.
His best game was his breakout performance against Kansas on Nov. 7. With ESPN broadcasting in prime time and potential No. 1 overall pick Darryn Peterson also on the floor, Wilson tallied 24 points on 9-for-11 shooting with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in an 87-74 victory over the Jayhawks.
If not for his injury, Wilson’s season may have gone down as one of the greatest in UNC history, let alone for a freshman. That’s saying a lot, considering Tyler Hansbrough, Antawn Jamison, Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins all had outstanding freshman seasons.
Wilson is projected to be a top-five pick in this year’s draft, with many mock drafts projecting him to go No. 4 overall to the Sacramento Kings. Even though he has declared for the draft, he could still withdraw and return to UNC next season. However, that remains extremely unlikely.
