Third baseman Caleb Durbin left the Red Sox’ game against the Rockies in the third inning Wednesday after diving into first base.
Durbin jammed his left hand against the front of the bag and suffered a left fifth finger (pinky) subluxation, according to the NESN broadcast.
He was trying to beat out a slow ground ball to first baseman TJ Rumfield. Rumfield flipped to pitcher Kyle Freeland covering first base for the final out of the inning.
Marcelo Mayer, who was not in the starting lineup because of a sore left foot, entered the game to play shortstop. Shortstop Andruw Monasterio moved to second base and second baseman Anthony Seigler moved to third base.
Durbin went 0 for 2 before exiting. He has been one of Boston’s best hitters recently, going 11 for 22 (.500) with two home runs and three doubles over his previous six games.
