The Meadville Bulldogs had plenty of chances, but couldn't find a timely hit in Friday's 7-3 loss to McDowell at Eldred Glen on senior night.
McDowell scored in the first to take a 1-0 lead and put early pressure on the 'Dogs. Meadville responded in the second with three consecutive walks to load the bases, but the Bulldogs didn't capitalize. In the third, Meadville stranded two runners on — but yet again — didn't bring anyone home.
"We had our chances early," Meadville head coach Tony Tartaglione said. "We left a lot of guys on base and didn't get that big hit.
After a Jacoby Thompson single and Bradyn Miller walk, Aiden Kleist stepped up with a timely hit for the 'Dogs. Kleist's single scored Thompson and Miller and tied the game at 2.
In the sixth, the Trojans scored four runs for a commanding 6-2 lead. McDowell forced Meadville to go three up, three down in the sixth before adding one run to its lead in the seventh.
Defensively, Meadville's AJ Feleppa surrendered four earned runs in five and a half innings with seven strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bradyn Miller, Meadville's lone senior, hit a leadoff single and scored from third on a McDowell throwing error. But that's where Meadville's rally stopped.
"We played McDowell tough. That was a 7-3 game, it was a good game til the sixth when they pulled ahead by three or four runs," Tartaglione said. "Pitching was good. AJ gave up four runs. That's a good outing that you should win."
Thompson, Miller and Kleist had Meadville's three hits. Miller scored two runs.
Meadville fell to 5-9 on the year overall and 4-8 in Region 7 play. The Bulldogs have three road games next week, all against region opponents, to close the regular season.
"We just don't get that big hit against the bigger teams. Defensively, we were fine. We made the plays we should," Tartaglione said. "We just can't capitalize against these teams."
