Filming of the pilot has started. My oldest daughter watched this show long after it aired. She is excited to see the new one since it's a sequel and not a remake.

It's a great show. Season 1 is a bit rough though. Gets much better after it. I've been using it as my filler show lately some of the episodes are really good. @Covert Rain's daughter is spot on with s2,3 and 5.

As for the new series, I'll give it a shot but I'm very apprehensive about it. First it's bringing back an old show. Second Joss isn't involved. His voice was unique for it and a big part of why the show worked. Whedonspeak usually doesn't work when other writers try to copy it.

One hopeful thing though is that the showrunners did a couple shows in the past that I liked. None were Whedon-like though which still gives that worry.

According to James Marsters, a ton of writer have all been trying to get in on writing for the show. He said many of them were huge fans of the show. That might not translate into a great show but that also gives me some hope they know the voice. Plus, I would like to see some of the old writers pop in and out. Whedon depended a ton on his writing staff as well and most of them are still going strong. He had an eye for writing talent.

Sarah Michelle Geller says the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was canceled by a Hulu executive who never watched the entire original series.

“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him...

"That's very hard when you're taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloé [Zhao]. So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it."

This whole thing is nuts. They have a built-in audience already and a lot of hype. And they cancel it. Wonder if they'll try to shop it around. Guaranteed we'll see a petition or two out there.

Huge Buffy fan, just finished a rewatch, but wasn't looking forward to this. Trying to recapture something after 20+ years gone never works out for the best. Let's get some new IP over trying to resurrect the dead. Anything that comes back to life needs to be staked by Mr. Pointy.

Scrubs also has the same creative team back for the reboot. Buffy didn’t and as great as Chloe Zhao is as a features director, she struck me as a very odd choice for this project.

I'm with you. Zhao needs the more indy type of material where she can be herself. Buffy seemed like a bad choice like when she did the Eternals. It's just a mismatch. You don't hire Wes Anderson to do Transformers and you don't hire Michael Bay to Rushmore.

Do you feel the same about Ryan Coogler doing X-Files?

A little bit but I don't think it's as big of a mismatch. X-Files is closer to his good work than Eternals and Buffy are to Zhao's.

I'm apprehensive about the reboot though and would be with pretty much anyone behind it. The original feels a bit like a product of its time due to it being different from everything that was out then. There was also something with Duchovney and Anderson's portrayals that will be hard to match. Even Carter couldn't recapture it with the two new season that they did. They just didn't have the same feel.

Crap, I just pulled it up. Season 10 was in 2016. It's hard to believe that it's been a decade already since they brought the show back for those two seasons. Now I'm feeling really old.

I’d rather see him do something original but he can absolutely pull off X-Files. Coogler is Spielberg-esque. He directs at the highest level and for mass audience consumption. Zhao is as arthouse as it gets which is why I think she was a strange fit for big brand nostalgia reboot.

Also, Coogler’s literally already proved he can do Big Brand nostalgia reboot with Creed. He’s also proved he can do massive comic book and massive genre film. He’s as Big Brand filmmaker as it gets and X-Files is big brand whether that’s TV or film adaptation.

I dunno man... IMO, most anybody going after X Files is likely to fail.

X-Files had a "Tin foil hat" feeling to it that was as much a product of the times as not....and as much as I dont care for the actor all so much... David Ducovney was absolute friggin nails as Fox Mulder....it wasnt just synonymous... Ducovney was Mulder...Mulder was X-Files.
I dont think they can use an existing actor to play the role... instead, prowl the scene night after night swilling caffeine until lightning strikes at some after hours drama workshop in soho.

also...age gap...my opinion of course... But they need to find a Mulder pushing fifty....but a Scully under thirty...
it plays into the theme and the roles. ... Fox Mulder as the once great up and comer that maybe screwed up somehow and gets banished to the cases nobody ever wants to work... Scully...the hot new thing...suddenly attached to Mulder as his partner...why is she being punished? Who has her spying on him and why?...that sort of thing...intrigue, questions, distrust.

its just a really tough gig and Buffy is the same. You can recreate the show but never the moment in time

Man, I really missed out on X-Files. Granted I wasn't watching much TV at the time, but the show runners absolutely ruined it for me. They were all "This is real stuff!" and, as I was calling BS personally, TV guide did an expose on it. Then the show runners were all "Sorry, we were just trying to drum up interest!" and so I vowed never to watch.

LOL

Chris Carter never claimed the show was real. It was based on consipiracy theories and urban legends, yes, but he NEVER said it was real. That's nonsense. The original impetus of the show (government conspiracy) was born out of his thoughts during Watergate.

I don't know if it was Chris Carter or producers or what, but I do know it spurred a TV guide expose that then spurred an apology and acknowledgement that it was claimed just to drive up ratings.

This version of the show is dead. Evidently according to SMG, the Executive in charge, never had seen the original show and didn't understand what this show was about. Evidently, after multiple episodes in the can, the Executive decided to cancel the show before airing.

It evidently had nothing to do with test audiences or it not being good material. Seriously...WTH?!?!? Didn't even let the pilot air to see how it would do. Between SMG and now Oscar winner Chloé Zhao I would be pissed.

Evidently, Hulu/Disney still wants to move forward with the IP per this article below but in another form. Sounds to me they want something less tied to the original. All because an Exec "didn't get it". UGH!

"remains high on the Buffy IP and plans to regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise."
