McAlester baseball came up short in its final district series to secure the four seed in District 5A-4.
The Buffaloes (15-14, 6-6 District 5A-4) extended their losing streak to three games following a sweep against Pryor (21-10, 11-1 District 5A-4), which clinched the District 5A-4 title.
McAlester’s offense was held in check in game one Monday. Tigers junior pitcher Jaron Bailey pitched a complete game, struck out two batters and only surrendered one earned run in Pryor’s 7-2 win.
Freshman catcher Jaxon McKinney doubled to center field and sophomore shortstop Denver Durant reached home plate on a wild pitch to contribute to the Buffaloes’ two runs.
With a top-4 seed on the line, McAlester freshman pitcher Brody Parker got the start in game two on the road Tuesday. He held the Tigers to one run heading into the third inning, but Pryor sophomore first baseman Carter Sloan hit a two-RBI double to extend his team’s lead to 4-0.
The Buffaloes got on the board in the fourth inning when senior right fielder Gunner Hodgell scored on the Tigers’ second error of the series. However, five more unanswered runs by Pryor left McAlester trailing 9-1 in the seventh.
Jackson Morgan, who came in to pinch hit for McAlester, hit an RBI single to spark a three-run rally with two outs. Sophomore right fielder Blake Judkins and freshman pitcher Grant Mullins both scored, although it wouldn’t be enough to make the comeback.
Tigers pitcher Gavin Roberts caught the game-sealing fly out to seal the 9-4 win and district title for Pryor. The junior pitched a complete game, recording seven strikeouts and surrendering five hits.
The Buffaloes will next host Wright City (24-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday.
