LAKELAND — When Santa Fe Catholic senior pitcher Noah Transue entered the game in the top of the fifth inning the Hawks were facing a crucial test. Lakeland Christian had two on with nobody out and trailed by a run.
What happened next, Transue said he doesn't really remember, but his performance will surely be talked about over the weekend.
Transue got the Crimson Hawks out of the jam and his offense helped tack on some insurance runs as Santa Fe beat Lakeland Christian 5-2 to win the Class 2A, District 7 title on Thursday night.
The win assures that Santa Fe will be home for next week's regional quarterfinals, while Lakeland Christian will be at home unless they're facing a district champion.
"I think I kind of blacked out a little bit," said Transue after getting a double play to get out the fifth inning. "There was a lot of emotion. I just came in, threw strikes, got outs and let my defense work. They were a huge part of that."
After getting the double play, one of three for Santa Fe, Transue erupted with a roar and was welcomed with matching emotion by his teammates as he came off the mound.
There was no letdown for the Hawks (21-5) in their half of the fifth as they added two insurance runs off an Angel Andujar groundout and a RBI single from Jameson McGuire.
Transue finished the game with three shutout innings.
"Noah's done a good job for us all year," Santa Fe head coach David Saliba said. "If we can stay healthy, we can play with anybody. This was a battle between two of the four best teams in the area, counting McKeel and George Jenkins in there. It was a good tight game. Our defense was a little bit better, especially up the middle. We got some timely hitting and we ran the bases well."
Lakeland Christian pounded out 10 hits but had little to show for its offense.
Brody Brenneman led the way with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate that included an RBI. Levi Howell went 3-for-4 for the Vikings (19-7) as well.
Brayden Abdon tripled and drove in two runs, and Armani Cozza went 2-for-3 with there run scored to lead Jenkins over Winter Haven. The Eagles (19-8) answered Winter Haven’s two-run first, with four runs in the bottom of the inning then took control with two runs in the third.
Izeah Vargas, GerardoSandoval and Gage McCrystal each had two hits for Winter Haven (12-15).
Austin Mott singled home Caiden Whittenton with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Bloodhounds (11-18) over the Blue Streaks. Whittenton finished 2 for 4, and Mott went 2-for 3.
Auburndale fell behind 3-0 then rallied for one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning.
GriffinCline allowed one run on two hits with seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory for Mulberry (18-7). Brock Thielen singled home Gavin Stedman with the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Earlier in the inning, Nic Partridge doubled then scored on a throwing error to tie the score at 1-1.
Lake Wales (12-15) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning on when courtesy running scored on an infield groundout.
Caleb Clanton pitched a two-hit shoutout with six strikouts to lead McKeel (18-7). Jorge Cordova went 3 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Wildcats’ offense.
