A video this week by reporter Matt Bové reveals that the Buffalo Bills are expected to bring back the franchise’s storied red helmets during the 2026 NFL season. Though unable to directly reveal when the helmets would return, Bové’s thinly veiled hints of “red and green, a holiday, and the Bills happen to be playing on that holiday this year (followed by an ELF clip” should allow everyone to put the pieces together.

That’s right, it’s Christmas! Look for official word about the red helmets’ return for the team’s Christmas Day game, a 4:30 p.m. EST road game against the Denver Broncos. This should see Buffalo wearing the road version of their red helmet threads for the first time since the ‘aughts variation. Of course, these red helmet throwbacks honor the Bills’ Super Bowl teams of the 1990s.

Buffalo last donned the red helmets for the team’s Week 18 game against the New York Jets. That game was of course the final matchup in the original Highmark Stadium, which is now in the process of being demolished.

Prior to Week 18 last season, the Bills had not worn their classic Super Bowl uniforms since the 2001 NFL season. In 2002, the team changed that uniform to adopt a darker hue of blue (royal), while adding a healthy dose of accent colors throughout the uniform and red helmet’s stripes.

It sure sounds like One Bills Drive’s plan is to gift Bills Country a throwback Christmas later this year!
