For the last handful of years, the Return of the Red and Blue preseason scrimmage has been a way for fans who may not have had the means to go to an actual game and get inside Highmark Stadium to see the Buffalo Bills take the field.
It was often an inexpensive evening out for families with young children who otherwise would never get the chance to watch players like Josh Allen and James Cook in person. It was also an event that anyone could get tickets for.
Well, not anymore.
First reported by Syracuse.com's Ryan Talbot and verified by Bills Roundtable, an email sent to fans revealed that the team is making its Return of the Red & Blue scrimmage a season-ticket holder-only event.
The email starts by thanking the recipient for their support of the team before getting into details.
"Every season ticket member will receive their seats for the Blue & Red event on Saturday, August 8th," the e-mail continues. "This is a season ticket member event only now. Not a general admission event like it has been in the past."
The news of the first major event at the new Highmark Stadium being limited to season ticket holders is sure to draw mixed reactions from fans.
On one hand, you have fans who paid thousands of dollars for their personal seat licenses (PSLs) and believe they should have the first chance to attend the stadium's opening event. On the other hand, you have fans who believe that, because they didn't have the thousands of dollars to spend on season tickets, they are being pushed aside as if they don't matter.
There's also the worry that, should season ticket holders not be able to attend the free extra event, there will be attempts to price gouge fans who might be desperate to attend.
The Return of the Red and Blue scrimmage is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 8, at 7pm. It takes place just one week before the team's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers.
