Sustaining success in the NFL is one of the hardest things to do for some teams around the NFL.
In the salary cap era, it's very difficult to retain enough talent to be considered title contenders for more than one or two straight years.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht knows this all too well. He also happens to be one of the few executives in the league who has a penchant for retooling his roster for sustained success.
There's a method to his madness as well. ... a "trade secret,'' if you will.
And it comes from the fact of evolving from year to year.
"It is an ongoing process and an evolving process of just trying to get better as an evaluator and like those cases, I was the one running up the mountain with the flag on some of those guys and you are not always right," Licht said on Mad Dog Sports Radio. "I think I have grown in my profession, in my job, to know that you can't always be right, but I think as a group we look and see what some of the traits were on some of those guys and we try to tweak it a little bit.”
Tampa Bay has won four straight division titles and has been to the playoffs in each of the last five seasons. To do so with two different coaches and quarterbacks in that span is a reminder of how strong the rest of the roster has been.
And Licht has played a key role in that.
How the Buccaneers move forward into 2025 and beyond will be heavily based on how well Licht can continue to evolve.
