Browns free agent David Njoku question has NFL fans confused originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

David Njoku doesn't know where he'll be playing football in the 2026 NFL season.

After hitting free agency at the end of his Cleveland Browns tenure, it's a bit surprising.

The calendar is about to flip to April, and there's clearly still time for Njoku to find a home, but the delay here has some football fans confused.

David Njoku is a very good football player and he is still a free agent and I would like to know why

Njoku has battled injury troubles, so that probably doesn't help his cause.

He also had a lesser 2025 season, but it's hard to know how much of that was his fault. The Browns utilized rookie TE Harold Fannin Jr. a lot, and they didn't get good QB play at all.

Njoku is still a big, athletic target who has proven he can produce in the NFL. But right now, that hasn't been enough to get him a contract.

Maybe he has options and is waiting to see what is best. Or maybe he doesn't yet have offers but figures they will come as needs become more obvious closer to the season.

Teams in the NFL are playing more tight ends, on average, than they have in a long time. The '12' personnel, with two tight ends and a running back, is being joined even by '13' personnel as a reliable formation for many teams.

It seems like that would benefit Njoku, who is still just 29 years old. But at least for right now, he's being forced to display patience.

Eventually, you'd have to think Njoku will land a deal somewhere new.
