The NFL had ten head coach openings this offseason. Surprisingly, none of them went to Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

Denver's head coach, Sean Payton, is happy to have Joseph still running his defense, and he expects VJ to eventually get another opportunity to run a team down the road.

“I love that he’s back," Payton said at the NFL combine. "I am a little surprised with the season we had, as well as we played defensively and with 10 openings. He and I get a chance to talk about that kind of stuff as the season was wearing down. I know he felt like he had a handful of interviews that were productive, and which he felt were really good opportunities. I know that when that opportunity comes for him, he’ll be successful.

"He has a presence about him. You guys have been around him. I think one of his superpowers is his calming presence. He pulls the best out of his players that play for him. It’s hard to tell. There are 32 of these teams that are owned individually. Every one is different. And yet, a lot of them have trouble getting out of their own way.”

Payton not-so-subtly implied that some NFL owners made a mistake by not hiring Joseph. Broncos general manager George Paton said he was "really surprised" Joseph didn't land a head coach job.

"I was really surprised, and I think we all felt like Vance would get a job," Paton said. "We love having him. He’s a special leader. He’s a great balance with Sean. I feel like all of our… You can bring in a young player [with him]. Look what he has done with Nik Bonitto and all of the young players who have developed under VJ’s watch. He has such a great presence to him. I think that he should be a head coach in this league. We’re really fortunate that he is here.”

If Denver's defense continues playing as it did from 2024-2025 in 2026, Joseph will likely get head coach interviews again in 2027. He seems poised to eventually return to a HC role, and the Broncos' brass clearly believes he's ready.
