After a historic year from the Denver Broncos' defense in 2025, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has a clear message to the 2026 team: It's time to get better.
"There's a good saying from VJ earlier today, cornerback Pat Surtain said when speaking at his foundation's charity event at Topgolf earlier this week (via Andrew Mason of DenverSports.com). "Basically saying, 'It's a new year. You know, whatever you did last year, doesn't matter now. It's a new slate. Teams are getting better and better, but we got to find a way, to find a way to get better than where we was last year.' And, obviously, we fell a little short last year, so we definitely got high hopes and aspirations coming up."

Denver's defense looks to improve in the turnover department, and try to lead the NFL in sacks once again. The Broncos' defense remains largely unchanged from 2025, so there is a lot of hope to return to the top of the league in 2026.
The Broncos' first six weeks will present the biggest challenge of the season, facing some of the best teams in football, including the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and starting against their AFC West foe, the Kansas City Chiefs.
However, Surtain said the team is up for the challenge. "I think that’s what NFL football’s about," Surtain said. "In order to reach the top, you’ve got to play the best. … That’s the exciting part about the game: You’ve got to prove yourself each and every year."
Beat the best. That has a nice ring to it. A clear, clarion call for the Broncos going into 2026.
