As the Denver Broncos prepare for the 2025 NFL draft, general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton will be looking for high-character prospects.
Speaking to players at the end of the 2024 campaign, Payton told his locker room and staff that the Broncos will look to bring in new players who fit the team's culture.
“I said to them -- that gets discussed in the last team meeting -- my message wasn’t for the players. I looked up to the second row, and there’s scouts, there’s personnel people, there’s various people, coaches as well. I said, ‘We owe the locker room that discussion for every player we choose to bring in,'" Payton said in January.
"In other words, and I brought up an example with [offensive line coach Zach] Strief. We drafted a player in New Orleans that was borderline make up. It didn’t work out, and Strief was close enough to me then — he was a player — he said, ‘What were you thinking?’ I just felt like a dope. What was I thinking? I knew better. In that last meeting, I brought that up to them that what’s going to be brought in here is going to be discussed as to the fit. We owe that to that room. That’s extremely important.”
Payton and Paton emphasized the importance of bringing in players who will fit the team's culture.
“The coaches, our scouts get into these schools," Paton said in January. "They have great resources. We have great scouts. They dig on these players. The make up, the football character. How much they love football. How much they like practice. This is hard. This team that we have here, they all love practice. They love the process. So we’re looking for guys like that.
"Mentally, how are they? Our guys, they have to be really smart for what we’re doing. So mentally, their personal character, that’s really important. If they don’t have that, then they’re off our board. It’s pretty simple, and then we’re just evaluating the talent. Even then Sean is really clear what he’s looking for at every position. I talk about that all the time. I talk about that in the draft. Our scouts are experts in what we’re looking for from a personal, from a make up stand point and a talent standpoint.”
Paton noted the Broncos even go to the extreme of moving players off their big board if they don't fit the traits the team is looking for. So that might remove a few prospects with character concerns from Denver's board this spring.
The 2025 NFL draft will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from April 24-26. The Broncos hold seven picks going into the draft (but that could change after potential trades).
