Broncos GM gives his take on NCAA's NIL impact on NFL draft

As the Denver Broncos prepare for the 2025 NFL draft, general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton are set to offer big contracts to the players they select. But unlike just five years ago, top prospects won't be getting paid (legally) for the first time when they reach the NFL.

Thanks to the NCAA's name, image and likeness (NIL) policy, some of the best prospects in college football can earn big money before they even go pro. Paton was asked about that at the NFL combine earlier this offseason.

“That’s a really good question," Paton said when asked in February if NIL deals changed the team's scouting process. "I would just say there are positives and negatives.

"The positives are, you get to see how these players react with money in their pocket. Do they still love it? Do they still work at it as hard as they did? Is the main thing still the main thing? Is football their priority? So we do get a taste of that. I think that’s very helpful.”

The 2025 NFL draft will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin from April 24-26.
