The Denver Broncos gave general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton new five-year contracts this spring, securing the leadership of the program through the 2030 season.
The club's quarterback, meanwhile, is signed through the 2027 campaign (with a potential fifth-year option for the 2028 season). Following the Paton and Payton deals, quarterback Bo Nix was asked if he'd also like a long-term extension from the club.
“Yeah, I mean, I think that question sort of answers itself," Nix said in June. "I think everyone that’s in the league wants that long-term extension and wants to play for their home team. For me, I love being here. I love where I’m at. I love this team. I’ll play as long as they want to have me.”
The question had an obvious answer, and it's also a bit premature. Nix is only entering his third season in the NFL, so he's not even eligible for an extension until 2027. The Broncos will very likely pick up his fifth-year option, and the QB will be a candidate for an extension as early as next spring.
For now, Nix is focused on the 2026 campaign with a team-friendly salary cap hit worth just over $5 million. His cap hit will increase to about $5.9 million in 2027 before a potential big jump with a fifth-year option in 2028. After that, a potential extension could start in 2029. In the meantime, Denver has an opportunity to build up the roster at other positions while Nix is playing on a team-friendly rookie deal. There's a window to compete for a title now before the cap becomes harder to manage a few seasons down the road.
