As the Denver Broncos prepare for the start of training camp next week, outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper is scheduled to have a (virtual) felony assault case disposition hearing today (July 24).
Cooper, 28, was originally arrested on June 5 after his girlfriend told police that Cooper allegedly held her off the ground by her neck and threw her multiple times. Cooper pleaded not guilty after his first arrest, and a jury trial hearing was originally scheduled for July 22.
However, one week after his first arrest, Cooper was arrested again on June 12 on charges of harassment (repeated text messages and phone calls) and violating a protection order. After that, Cooper's various charges against him were consolidated into a felony assault case with a new hearing set for July 24 (today).
As part of the NFL's personal conduct policy, Cooper could face a suspension. The pass rusher was excused from mandatory minicamp after his second arrest.
"Clearly, from an ownership standpoint, head coach, organizationally… there’s a bar that we have, and an expectation that we have, that’s very high," Broncos coach Sean Payton said in June. "We’ll consider all of that as we continue to gather the information. That’s really all I can tell you. I think it’ll take a little bit of time, but we’re continuing to go through that process, and we take it very seriously.”
Denver's veterans are scheduled to report for training camp on July 28, with practices beginning July 31. If Cooper is absent or excused, the team's remaining outside linebacker options behind Nik Bonitto will include Jonah Elliss, Que Robinson, Dondrea Tillman and Drew Sanders.
