The Denver Broncos might be on the verge of losing a key member of Sean Payton's coaching staff.
Broncos defensive backs coach Jim Leonhard is "expected to be a leading candidate" for the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator position, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. Buffalo just named Joe Brady its head coach on Tuesday, and he is now busy building his coaching staff.
Leonhard, 43, is an overqualified DBs coach who was promoted to assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator in 2025. The former NFL safety spent the first three years of his playing career with the Bills and he later had a second stint with the club late in his career. Leonhard made a name for himself as a coach at Wisconsin, his alma mater, and he took his first NFL job with the Broncos in 2024.
If Leonhard does take the Buffalo job, it might be some consolation to Denver that current defensive coordinator Vance Joseph does not appear to be a favorite for any of the NFL's remaining head coach openings. Leonhard was believed to be a possible in-house DC replacement if the Broncos lost Joseph this offseason, but it now looks like Joseph could potentially stay in Denver with Leonhard moving on with a promotion elsewhere.
