The Milwaukee Brewers completed a sweep of the Colorado Rockies in dominant fashion on Sunday with a 12-4 win at Coors Field in Denver.
The Brewers were highly productive in multiple facets of the game. How did they get the win?
After the Rockies got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to make it a 2-0 game, the Brewers had a response
After Andrew Vaughn opened up the top of the second inning with a leadoff single, Luis Rengifo later hit an RBI double to score Vaughn to make it a 2-1 contest. In the bottom of the fifth, the Rockies scored again to reclaim their two-run advantage.
Then, in the top of the sixth, Milwaukee took over.
The inning began with a William Contreras leadoff single before Vaughn hit an RBI triple. After the Rockies went to their bullpen, Gary Sanchez hit a two-run home run to make it a 4-3 game and give the Brewers their first lead of the day.
Afterward, Garrett Mitchell doubled before Luis Rengifo, Blake Perkins, and Joey Ortiz walked to make it a 5-3 game before Colorado could get its first out. From there, Brice Turang hit a two-RBI single before Contreras got another run across with a groundout to give Milwaukee an 8-3 lead and complete a seven-run inning.
The Brewers went scoreless in the seventh and eighth before putting up a four-run ninth thanks to an RBI double by Sanchez, a two-RBI triple by Mitchell and an RBI-sacrifice fly by Rengifo. Overall, Milwaukee had 17 hits, and five batters had multi-hit days.
The Brewers called on rookie Shane Drohan to make the start, his third of the season.
While it wasn't Drohan's most polished performance, he was able to provide innings for Milwaukee, which helped in a time when several relievers are out with injury. Drohan pitched 6.1 innings and struck out four batters while allowing five hits, three earned runs, and one walk.
After Drohan’s afternoon was over, manager Pat Murphy went to reliever Chad Patrick, who provided 1.2 innings and struck out one batter while allowing one hit. Right-hander Craig Yoho finished the game by providing one inning and striking out two batters while allowing one hit and one earned run.
After their sweep of the Rockies, the Brewers are now 40-23 and maintain a five-game lead for first place in the National League Central Division. Their West Coast trip continues when they face the Athletics on Monday at 9:05 p.m. CT.
