In the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected USC center Jonah Monheim.
Let's break down the pick, and if you missed our other recaps, you can find them below.
You won't find many draft prospects who have more experience than Monheim, who played 3,136 career snaps on offense during his five seasons at USC. While Monheim played center in his final season, he has experience in multiple positions, including 387 snaps at right guard and 1,157 snaps at right tackle.
As USC's center in 2024, Monheim didn't allow any sacks and surrendered 16 pressures across 514 pass-blocking snaps. Out of 123 eligible centers, he ranked 67th in pass-blocking efficiency and was 29th in run-blocking grade.
In the short term, the addition of Monheim further boosts the Jaguars' depth at center and probably guard as well. Down the road, in the potentially not-so-distant future, Monheim could be a longer-term option at center for the Jaguars. Luke Fortner is a free agent in 2026, and Robert Hainsey's three-year deal is more like a two-year contract cap-wise.
Lance Zierlein: "Versatile offensive lineman with impressive football intelligence and quality pass protection. Monheim has started at guard, tackle and center, but a lack of functional length narrows the focus on where he could take snaps at the next level. He plays with punch quickness and accurate hands but will get beat by longer rushers and a two-gapping nose tackle. He fits up blocks on time, but won’t get much push or displacement. He does excellent work identifying fronts and communicating with teammates, which will endear him to coaches, but Monheim might not create enough plus reps against NFL opponents to make his mark."
