Logansport’s fourth-quarter comeback win against Western has put the Berries in position to play for the Hoosier Conference championship next month.
The Berries (8-5) now turn their attention to McCutcheon (3-8), as they host their former North Central Conference rivals tonight in the Berry Bowl.
“McCutcheon is typically a really good team,” Logansport coach Matt Lange said. “We will have to stay prepared coming off a big win on Saturday night. Hopefully we don’t have any letdown as we move into Friday. Even though it’s not a conference game anymore, it’s still an important game in our season, especially what we’re wanting to do as we head into March.”
The Mavericks beat the Berries by 27 points a year ago and the former Sectional 7 foe remains a formidable opponent.
“They’ve got some good guards and quick guards, some good shooting,” Lange said. “Typical McCutcheon in that they work hard and they’re well coached and well schooled, so that’ll be something we’ll have to fight the whole night.”
The Berries turn around and make the short trip to Lewis Cass on Saturday night to face the Kings for the only time this season.
“They’ve got a talented senior class,” Lange said. “They’ve got a little bit of size, especially at the guard spots, and they’ll be a challenge. It’ll be a challenge for us from a matchup standpoint. It’ll be a challenge for us going out there and playing because they are such a rival.”
The Berries outscored Western 24-13 in the fourth quarter last Saturday to defeat the Panthers 65-56 and put themselves in the Hoosier Conference championship game on Feb. 20. The Berries will travel to the East Division champion, which is yet to be determined.
“It was really a big thing for us to come out in the second half and play a lot better and play the kind of game we should play for the full game was exciting for me and our coaching staff,” Lange said. “Hopefully the kids will keep that boost of energy as we move forward.”
Eli Baldwin is averaging 16.2 ppg and 7.0 rpg for the Berries. R.J. Clem averages 14.5 ppg and 9.8 rpg. Logan Lange averages 11.9 ppg, 5.5 apg and 2.8 spg. Marquon Bell adds 6.3 ppg.
ROCHESTER (4-5, 1-1 TRC) AT CASS (6-3, 3-1)
The Kings are taking a three-game win streak into the weekend.
They host a Rochester team that is coming off a double overtime win at Twin Lakes last weekend, which backed up a 25-point win over Whitko.
The Kings then turn around and host county rival Logansport on Saturday.
“This will be another tough weekend for us,” Cass coach Eric Branz said. “Rochester is coming off a good weekend where they played really well against a tough conference opponent in Whitko. Then they went on the road and defeated Twin Lakes. Rochester has steadily gotten better as the year has gone on so their record doesn’t mean anything, they are playing well right now.
“Logansport is coming off a big win against Western and has a good year going. Each team presents different difficulties that we will have to face. This makes the week of preparation a little tricky. We look forward to the challenges we will face in both games. However, we have to remain focused and disciplined, taking it one game at a time.”
Brennan Deeter averages 14.4 ppg for the Kings. Julian Levine averages 13.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Owen Cotner-Graves adds 7.3 ppg and Trey Johnson adds 6.7 ppg.
DEMOTTE CHRISTIAN (9-2) AT PIONEER (1-8)
Pioneer hosts one of the Sectional 50 favorites tonight. Tonight marks just the second home game of the season for the Panthers.
The Panthers beat the Knights 44-41 a year ago and are 3-1 against them all-time.
They are also buoyed by the return of starting guard Micah Rans, who returned to the court for the first time this season last weekend since his broken fibula injury suffered during football.
The Panthers turn around and host Carroll (2-8). The Cougars host Clinton Prairie for an HHC game tonight.
WEST CENTRAL (9-0) AT CASTON (9-2), SAT.
Two of the favorites of Sectional 50 square off Saturday night in Fulton.
The Trojans enter the weekend undefeated and ranked fifth in Class 1A. They host Tri-County for an MWC game tonight.
West Central knocked off Caston in last year’s sectional before falling to Tri-County in the final.
Logan Mollenkopf is averaging 18.5 ppg and 7.7 rpg for the Comets. Lane Hook averages 17.0 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Carson Harness adds 6.8 ppg.
