MASON CITY — In a game filled with career scoring efforts, it was Marcele Whitner's effort that truly stood out on Friday.
The Mason City senior scored a career-high 33 points for the Riverhawks, shooting 10-15 from the field including 5-8 from 3-point range while making all eight free throw attempts in a 91-57 win over Ottumwa in a battle of Iowa Alliance Conference boys basketball squads.
"We were just very flat defensively," Ottumwa head boys basketball coach Chris Gravett said. "Our zone was ineffective."
Seven different players scored in double figures between the two teams, including a triple-double by Jameer Falls that included 10 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for Mason City. Ty Sanchez-Evans added 16 points while Owen Rickers scored 14 points for the Riverhawks, who finishing shooting over 56 percent from the field against the Bulldogs.
"We had turnovers, but they didn't kill us," Gravett said. "We are scoring enough to win, but it comes down to the defensive end."
Ottumwa finished with a balanced scoring effort, including a career-high 12 points from freshman Ty Wetrich. Mason Gravett and Charlie Morgan also finished with 12 points apiece for the Bulldogs.
Ottumwa (2-9) heads to Des Moines Roosevelt on Tuesday for an Iowa Alliance south division contest.
