MASON CITY — Near or far from home, Blake Goldsmith is proving to be a consistent threat in the post.
The Ottumwa freshman kept two streaks alive on Friday, scoring a team-high 21 points while hauling in a team-high 10 rebounds giving Goldsmith three consecutive double-doubles. The Bulldogs made the most of their longest road trip of the season, traveling almost 200 miles over three hours to secure their ninth straight victory with a 66-43 triumph at Mason City.
"It's nice to play and be able to rely on your teammates," Goldsmith said. "It's not just one person. We can achieve it all as a team. I think that's definitely good for our team to be able to rely on each other."
Ottumwa's balance once again carried the day as five different players reached double figures in scoring against the Riverhawks. Hayden Keith added 14 points, sinking four of five shots from 3-point range, while Emma Ryder scored 11 points and blocked six Mason City shots.
"We used our six and length to our advantage all night," Ottumwa head girls basketball coach Kyle Creamer said. "We shared the ball well. Mason City is a scrappy team and I think they're better than what their record shows."
Alli Goedken returned after having to miss last Tuesday's game with Oskaloosa due to an illness, scoring 10 points while dishing out a team-leading seven assists and collecting a team-high three steals. Macie VandenBerg also produced a career night against the Riverhawks as the Ottumwa freshman scored 10 points while hauling in six rebounds.
"This was a good win for us after a long week of games and fighting illness," Creamer said.
Ottumwa (9-2) will put their winning streak to the test on Tuesday with a chance to take full control of winning the outright Iowa Alliance Conference south division title. The Bulldogs head to Des Moines Roosevelt as the Roughriders will be seeking to even the season series and tie Ottumwa atop the conference standings.
