Boston Media Personality Pitches Blockbuster Jayson Tatum–Donovan Mitchell Trade Idea originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There has been considerable speculation in the NBA about the Celtics' trading Jaylen Brown this offseason. However, there's also the question of whether Boston might opt to keep Brown and instead look into trading Jayson Tatum.
Although the chances of the Celtics moving Tatum are extremely low —around 1% — they are acutely aware of how his recovery from the Achilles injury could affect his performance. If there are any lingering concerns about his ability to bounce back to his previous form, Boston might reassess its stance. Recently, James Stewart from 98.5 The Sports Hub shared an intriguing trade proposal worth considering.
Stewart suggested that the Celtics consider trading Tatum and Derrick White to the Cavs in exchange for Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, and three unprotected first-round picks.
"How about Tatum and White to the Cavs for Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen and three future unprotected 1st round picks," Stewart wrote Tuesday on X. "This trade saves the Celtics about $16 million."
The Celtics would be losing their best player, but Mitchell is also a top-10 talent in the NBA, and Allen is one of the better centers. Boston could pair Mitchell and Brown in the backcourt, allowing Allen to take the starting spot at center. Boston would also have a nice future set up with three first-round picks, but it would be hard to move on from Tatum since his ceiling is higher than Mitchell's.
