Gerald Green made a name for himself dunking the ball with the Boston Celtics, who drafted him directly out of high school in 2005. But a freak accident when the Houston native was above the rim could have convinced the No. 18 overall pick to play a more ground-bound style of play if not quit the sport entirely.
Green lost part of his finger dunking the ball as a teenager, and told how it all went down in a recent interview. "My pops used to wear rings," said the Celtics alum. "Used to wear all the chains and (expletive) ... my mama had a class ring. It was a it was a class (ring) -- gold too. (...) I was like, 'Mom, let me wear this ... I want to wear a ring like my dad."
Thinking back on that fateful dunk attempt on a homemade hoop, he continued. "So, there was a nail on the wall, on top; I ran, jumped, touched the top of the door and slid down, boom. That (expletive) hit my finger. Man, that (expletive) cut all (the way to) my bone -- my finger was still attached, but the skin ripped off. It's called like a ring avulsion."
"So, I'm looking at my hand and I'm seeing nothing but bone," Green added. "And I'm looking on the floor. My old man is asleep on the couch, I wake my old man up and I show him my hand. 'Damn, I messed my hand up!' And that (expletive) jumped up, boom ... my old man, he's like 'Go find your finger, where's the skin at?'"
Seeing his hand without the finger, Green recoiled. "That's when I broke down (...)," said the Boston alum. "That (expletive) hurt me ... that (expletive) has changed me. I was like twelve, bro ... nobody understand what it is losing a limb when you're not supposed to lose a limb."
But Green did not stop playing sports afterward despite the traumatic injury and growing up poor. He did not pick basketball back up until his sophomore season, his ability getting him on the path that would one day lead to the NBA.

"I'm like, 'Man, I'm so (expletive) up, bro, that I don't even know'; it's right in front of me. It wasn't bleeding (a lot), not that I remember. It wasn't gushing ... (it) was straight bone, bro ... So, old man gets the finger. He go gets the ice, puts (it) on my hand ... Didn't cry the whole time. Rushed to the hospital, they (said) 'We can't we can't take him, we've got to take him to Children's Hospital, so we rushed to (the) Children's Hospital. I knocked out. I don't even remember that part. I wake up. I seen my hand hanging ... I'm like, 'Damn, what the (expletive)?"
