NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) -- U-High made a run to the semifinals of the IHSA playoffs in 2024, but after graduating a lot of talent from that roster, the Pioneers finished last season at 5-5 season and saw them lose in the first round of the playoffs.
The Pioneers will be bringing back plenty of experience on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary. Head coach Brody Walworth says they will be relying on the veteran presence of the back seven on defense. The Pioneers intercepted 13 passes and forced numerous fumbles a year ago. The U-High offense may be young, but the ball-hawking defense is hoping to create more turnovers to regularly give the offense good field position.

"Defense and really football but defense specially man your 11 guys have got to all be in sync and so if our D-linemen get out of position that's where some experience in the back end helps make them right no matter what they do," said Walworth. "And so that group can fly around. I think they tackle well so they can they can make right some things that maybe if there's some mistakes up front."
"I think the biggest thing is turnovers," said senior Hayden Washum Being able to get them on the field as fast as possible will get them the momentum they need and those big plays stopping of big fourth down, those big plays will help them get the momentum to be able to score and get us the points that we need to win a football game.
The Pioneers will head to Rochelle to take on the Hubs in week 1.
