PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- Manual has struggled on the gridiron in recent years and went winless last season at 0-9. Over the previous three seasons the Rams have won only three games.
Despite the struggles, Manual is optimistic about this year's group. Head coach Dennis Bailey said the team is ignoring the outside noise and is only controlling what they can control, and that's effort, attitude, and toughness.
"It's three things that we control, and that's one thing that I've been emphasizing," said Bailey. "For some, this is how much effort we give in every day, our attitude is play in out and play out and the toughness we play with the football requires toughness. The effort has been there all summer and then our toughness on both sides of the ball has picked up a lot."

"Last year and the years that I've been here, it hasn't been a lot of effort, which really was probably the big thing. And this year it's like a lot of effort," said junior quarterback B.J. Maxison. "So, we're all getting better every single day that we touch the field. There's no wasted movements at all in our practices. The toughness has been there. We haven't been slacking at all and attitudes have been better. There's been a lot less talking back to coaches."
The Rams hit the road in week one to take on Lincoln.
