CANTON, Ill. (WMBD) -- The IHSA is adding more teams to the playoff picture this season. 48 teams in each class will now qualify for the postseason and Canton head coach Nick McCormick hopes the Little Giants can end a 10-year playoff drought with the new format.

The Little Giants have 75 players on their roster this season and in total they boast a large sophomore and junior class. One of those juniors is new starting quarterback Caleb Jochums, but he won't be alone on offense. Four of the starting five offensive lineman return for their senior seasons as well, with center Luke Nelson having childhood chemistry with the new man under center.

"Me and Caleb are really good friends off the field, so that connection really carries over to the football field," said Nelson. "He's been a great leader back there and just does everything this team needs to succeed. He's an all-around great ballplayer, and we're really excited for him to lead the offense."

"I've known all these linemen, honestly, my whole life. Luke I've played football and baseball with since I was 8 years old. We have pretty good camaraderie and pretty good experience playing football together," said Jochums. "I wanna make sure when they walk off the field the last time that I did everything in my power to help them remember a good football season the rest of their lives."

Canton hits the road to take on Herscher in week one.
