It’s a tricky time to be a Reading fan. Well, in all honesty, this whole season has been.
Tuesday’s game was an epitome of our situation right now. Disjointed, inconsistent – the whole game just felt a bit of a chore for the fans and a struggle for the players.
We got exactly what we deserved in terms of Bolton Wanderers’ last-minute equaliser. In hindsight, when you look at the second half, we’re probably lucky to walk away with a point.
There were few individual moments for the fans to talk about, more a general sense of frustration at the performance…
All too familiar issues
It’s fair to say results recently have done their best to paper over the cracks of the actual performances. With that has come a fine balancing act for the fans: are we ultimately happy at the result, or are the performances a bigger concern?
Unfortunately, for the players and Leam Richardson, when we don’t win and still play poorly, the fans are able to be a bit more unanimous in their verdict. Spoiler alert, it’s not a very pretty one…
Thing is once we score we just expect the opposition to equalise. Nothing changes, every game is the same the only difference is the opposition. Without Jack Marriott we'd be bottom 4. Richardson ball is a joke. We arent remotely exciting to watch at all

points from 2 tough games, but the football was woeful. Tbf, I thought Bolton looked a decent team but we played not to lose. We can play well in short spells and I don’t understand why we can’t do it for longer periods.

This tactic of allowing teams to play and then soaking up pressure, much like an away team, at home has to stop. We’re the home team, look to control the game and get on the front foot. Stop inviting so much pressure.

Almost got away with it again there somehow, but
#readingfc can have absolutely zero complaints when they don't. Second half was so negative it almost bordered on comical at times. Particularly frustrating when they had moments of looking dangerous in the first half. So confusing

Must be a genuinely unenjoyable place to play football right now. Fortunate results have come meaning the manager thinks he's right, but it's clear on every football statistic and the eye test he isn't. Players must be hating how they're being told to set up and play.

Red card debate
One thing that got the fans talking is the incident between Paudie O’Connor and Johnny Kenny that left the defender with a bloody face and needing to be substituted.
In real time it looked like an unfortunate accident, but the more you watch it, the more you feel the Bolton man could’ve got out the way. That’s certainly the consensus among the Loyal Royals…
Was Mings sent off for what he did to Oliveira? I want to say he wasn’t but struggling to recall.

Jack Marriott
He’s not the only shining light or positive right now, but he’s definitely the biggest.
Another goal for him on Tuesday sent him to the top of the League One goalscoring chart. Although he went off injured midway through the second half, he seemed pretty positive after the game that he’d be fit for Saturday.
As relieving as that is to hear, it did raise the issue of where we’d be without him – a question the fans aren’t ready to fully confront yet…
I really hope Marriott’s injury isn’t serious — it feels like our season hinges on him. Now we’ll see: is Leam being carried by Marriott, or can he still pick up points without him?

Marriott deserves a rest. Taking him off was the right decision, and hopefully it’s just fatigue rather than an injury. He’s such an important player for us — what a talent he is.

Conclusion
It’s tricky to really sum up how I’m feeling right now in a few words. I understand all of this is a process and it will take time for us to become a Richardson team.
But right now, it’s just a bit turgid, isn’t it? The football isn’t good to watch, and it’s not sustainable to keep playing the way we are and expect to pick up results.
I saw a tweet earlier that I feel hits the nail on the head – I won’t post it as it contains an expletive. However,
@david_winks1987, you’re absolutely right: nobody started watching football for the results, we started watching it because of the entertainment.
I want that back. I want to enjoy watching Reading play again. Hopefully that will come soon.
