It’s largely been the case this season that our performances as a team have been rather unconvincing yet we’ve still managed to pick up important results through – mostly – impressive individual showings. The Valentine’s Day win over Wycombe Wanderers epitomised that.
Wycombe were very good – the stats show they dominated the game – yet Jack Marriott once more showed just how important he is to us, and just how good he is for this level.
His hat-trick, all of which were terrific goals in their own right, sealed a really good win. Here’s how the fans reacted to the key talking points…
Jack Marriott
There’s only one place to start really, isn’t there? Marriott’s first was a proper poacher’s goal, his second a bulldozing finish, and his third was quite simply stupendous.
It’s fair to say his signing was met with a lack of real enthusiasm from the fans, but he’s turned into arguably our best striker in recent times – most definitely one of the most effective.
He left the fans purring once again on Saturday…
Jack Marriott is the best finisher I've ever seen in a royals shirt ! #readingfc

Not just the volume and regularity of Marriott's goals that impresses, but also the array of methods and clever finishes. Thrives on service, makes things for himself and punishes errors. #readingfc's most potent scorer for years and one of the best impact signings I can remember

Jack Marriott is some, some player by the way.#readingfc

Only 4 words to sum that game up, Marriott again Ole Ole! #readingfc

Haven't seen a better finisher than Marriott since the Kevin Doyle era #readingfc

Papering over the cracks?
While Marriott rightly stole the show, it can also be true that it was another below-par performance. Stats don’t tell a whole story, I know that, but they give a pretty good indicator of how a game went – and if you play that exact game another 10 times, Wycombe probably win nine of them.
Picking up results on a regular basis is a very good trait to have – we’re seventh now and that has to be applauded – but whether we can keep doing that, while playing the way we are, is another question entirely.
Some of the fans were more concerned with the shoddy performance than they were delighted about the win…
Jack Marriott has covered up what was a dreadful performance. Dreadful lineup choice. And late subs that could’ve been done earlier or even started. #readingfcpic.twitter.com/CY4fQ0DZVF

Weirdly feel empty after that. Without Marriott we'd have lost that 6-0.
A home win that felt like an away win but without the limbs or the joy.
Baffling. #readingfc

Honestly that was dreadful, we were awful all afternoon, yes it's a win but we were very fortunate, didn't deserve it at all. Wycombe will be sick with that, Marriott getting us out of jail yet again #readingfc

Let's not try and pretend things weren't poor today.
Some of the tactics starting with the line up today were bewildering.
After that performance neither Yiadom or Dorsett should be starting games. Amount of joy Wycombe got down the wings was frightening #readingfc

i take the 3 points. But how can you get dominated like that. No idea of play style. We just make teams look good with zero ideas of how to counteract their tactics. Thank god we have marriott! Absolute machine !!! #readingfc

Marriott is something else, but that was nothing short of an appalling performance. Result is important, but the football is complete dross. #readingfc

Let’s not beat about the bush here. That was awful. Marriott has spared Richardson massively. #readingfc

I feel almost no joy after that game. These performances are so bad, the wins almost don’t feel worth celebrating.#Readingfc

The need for positivity
We all seem to be in a bit of a weird space at the moment. Results are on the whole good, but performances haven’t been. So there’s a tricky balance between being impressed and happy that we’re three points off the playoffs, but also being concerned about the poor performances.
While there was definitely a section of the fanbase frustrated on Saturday, some wanted to see a bit more positivity from the fellow Loyal Royals…
I've been negative today so here are some POSITIVES. #ReadingFC
– Marriott clinical.
– JP saved the game multiple times.
– Saw Rushesha so he is alive.
– Roberts a beast off the bench, HAS to start every game.
– 90 minutes rest for Nyambe so should be available all season. pic.twitter.com/uEflmwD7Wx

A lot of negativity on the timeline today, so here’s the positive cleanse.
three points
Marriott
Benn Ward
league table
size of squad
standard of opposition
presence of luck
Negatives also very present, but it’s sad to forget the good. #readingfc

Good win today! Biggest result was getting my youngest to his first game in over 8 years and now he wants to go again… #readingfcpic.twitter.com/lGvcyKF8dO

Important win for #Readingfc
Really does feel like we’re playing a more polished and better version of “Hunt ball”. That’ll be enough to see out a lot of teams but there comes a point where we need to change it up.

Some win and that’s all that matters today. 3 points not playing well isn’t the worst thing in the world. Still needing more from our wide players. Not in the game enough. Marriott on course for player of the season, what a signing he’s turned out to be! #ReadingFC
— Alex Sheppard (@Alex_Shep_Urzz) February 14, 2026
OK first half, what they were doing for 30 mins second half is up for debate (LR going mad on the touchline). Lovely to win. That’s two in the bounce we’ve won without really being the better team. I’d call that progress! Improvement on Wigan performance (not hard). #readingfc

Conclusion
- Being able to regularly get results is a very good trait to have
- It is highly unlikely we’ll be able to keep picking up wins while putting in the kind of performances we are
- Marriott is the best striker in League One
All of those things are true at the same time. It’s a really weird time being a Reading fan at the moment. We are seventh in the league, three points off the playoffs, with a game in hand. That is an objectively good position to be in during the middle of February.
However, this team still needs to develop and improve – there is no doubt about that. We cannot keep relying on Marriott to get on the scoresheet – as inevitable as that may seem right now.
Next up, Bolton Wanderers at home.
