'Boeheim's Army,' a team comprised with a mix of former Syracuse basketball players and non-SU alums, defeated 'Hall In', a team representing Seton Hall in Game 1 of a best-of-three in New Jersey on Tuesday night.
The 82-52 win was a decisive showing for the Syracuse alumni. Both teams are competing in the opening round of the 2026 edition of The Basketball Tournament (TBT).
This year's edition of 'Boeheim's Army' is coached by Thomas Bridges. Bridges and his roster are looking to win the event for the second time in tournament history.
The winner of this year's event will bring home the grand prize of $2 million dollars.
Here's what you need to know.
As 'Boeheim's Army' prepped for tip-off in New Jersey, the roster was lacking one projected key contributor. Former Orange player and nine-year NBA veteran Wes Johnson was not with the team. According to reporter Donna Ditota, Johnson had obligations to another tournament that kept him away from Tuesday's TBT game.
He did not play, but is expected to be in Syracuse for Game 2 on Thursday night.
-'Boeheim's Army' entered the game with just eight active players after the absence of Johnson. The starting five featured Buddy Boeheim, Elijah Hughes, Cole Swider, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu and Tyson Walker.
-Swider led the team in scoring at halftime as his squad led 44-29 entering the break. After one half of play, Swider, a player who played for four different NBA teams, posted 16 points and 6 rebounds. Swider finished the game with a team-high 28 points.
--The fourth quarter again featured an Elam Ending finish.
'Boeheim’s Army' held a 74-45 lead going to the under four-minute mark. The Elam Ending held a target score of 82. That meant Hall In needed 37 points before Boeheim’s Army could get eight more if they wanted to complete a comeback victory.
-Akobundu-Ehiogu posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Hughes tailed 12 points in Game 1.
The following two games will be held in Syracuse at the OnCenter War Memorial. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday while Game 3 is Friday, if necessary.
If Syracuse wins the series, it will advance to take on the Kentucky-Louisville alumni matchup winner. The game between Syracuse and Kentucky-Louisville would be a single elimination game held on Sunday.
