LEXINGTON — In 2024, La Familia — the Kentucky basketball alumni team — squared off with The Ville (a squad filled with ex-Louisville players) in the quarterfinals of The Basketball Tournament.
La Familia went on the road and held on for a 70-61 victory at Freedom Hall, which clinched a spot in the TBT semifinals.
The clubs were expected to meet again in last year's event. But The Ville fell in the second round. La Familia also bowed out sooner than it would have liked, losing in the Lexington Regional final to Eberlein Drive.
Nothing is standing in the way of the former Cardinals and Wildcats this year, though.
The TBT has altered its format, with La Familia and The Ville kicking off the tournament today as part of a best-of-three series. Memorial Coliseum takes center stage for Game 1 this afternoon.
The winner of the series advances to the TBT quarterfinals, where it faces the victor of the series between Boeheim's Army (featuring Syracuse alumni) and Hall In (highlighting former Seton Hall players).
