Blue Jays get surprisingly good Tarik Skubal trade update originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Toronto Blue Jays often put themselves in the mix for big names, especially in recent seasons.
They don't often land them, though. The story of guys like Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Tucker is that they nearly ended up in Toronto but didn't actually make it there.
Tarik Skubal, the Blue Jays hope, could be a different story.
It came as at least a little bit of a surprise that ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, in a new article on Wednesday, named the Blue Jays as one of the six best fits for Skubal.

The others make sense: the Dodgers, Yankees, Braves, Brewers and Rays.
Toronto, relative to those teams, is a bit off the pace this season.
Coming off a trip to Game 7 of the World Series, though, the Blue Jays are likely still aiming big even if they haven't quite performed to that level yet.
Skubal would be the biggest possible swing they could take, although Toronto likely has to be patient as he returns to health and then tries to make one final push at getting the Tigers into the playoff picture first.
The ESPN duo thinks that overall, there's an 85% chance Skubal is traded. It's just a matter of to which team.
"Considering the hole they've dug themselves, they are far more likely than not to move Skubal -- beyond their six-game deficit for the final wild card, they are behind six other teams -- and they will squeeze every ounce of value out of the best pitcher in the world," Passan and McDaniel write. "He is the dream deadline candidate, the sort of ace who can carry a team in the postseason. Whoever lands Skubal will pay an enormous price. Happily."

The Blue Jays would have to give up a lot to get Skubal, so Toronto probably only throws itself fully into the mix if there's a hot streak over the next month-plus to get into better position.
But keep an eye on the Blue Jays, because there must be some buzz about them wanting Skubal, or these ESPN guys wouldn't have mentioned it in the first place.
