Blue Jays almost lost Bo Bichette to the Red Sox, but Boston report shows it continues to fail its fans originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Many Boston Red Sox fans wanted the team to be aggressive in the offseason by signing an above-average offensive player, especially after there were reports that Alex Bregman wasn't going to return.
Keeping Bregman in town would have been the wise decision for the Red Sox to make, though there was also a feeling that they could have landed somebody like Bo Bichette.
Bichette, who was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays and ended up taking a deal with the New York Mets, was one of the top five players available in last year's offseason. He hasn't played well in New York just yet, but if history is on his side, he'll be more than fine eventually.
However, the Red Sox's decision not to be aggressive in attempting to land him was definitely questionable, and as we look at some reports now, it raises even more questions about what the front office was doing in the offseason.
"What I’ve heard today is, it’s not just that they are looking for a right-handed hitter, they are aggressively looking for a right-handed hitter and signaling to the industry, ‘Look, we’re willing to take on money. We’re willing to take on a lot of money,’” ESPN’s Buster Olney said on “Just Baseball Media.”
“Which, of course, raises the question, why didn’t you just pay Alex Bregman? But the way this is being interpreted is: Man, there’s some desperation setting in there in Boston because of this ugly start, how poorly they’re playing at home, winning a third of their games, struggling offensively and understanding they have an imbalance in their lineup.”
I don't really understand how the Red Sox are going out and attempting to make moves when they've been one of the worst teams, and perhaps the most disappointing team, in the American League.
If they're also willing to make a big move to move on from prospects and spend money on a player right now, why didn't they just give Bichette what he was looking for?
It would have been interesting seeing him go from the Blue Jays to the Red Sox, but I don't think most Blue Jays fans would be too upset right now, considering how poorly he's played.
