Former MLB general manager shows why Blue Jays were geniuses for letting Bo Bichette walk after latest report originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Toronto Blue Jays decided to allow Bo Bichette to walk for what seems like a slew of reasons.
Bichette didn't fit into the Blue Jays' long-term plans, and with his defense as horrendous as it was, there really didn't seem to be much reason to keep him around.
At the time, I didn't agree with it, but the Blue Jays seemingly made the right decision now, though the latest report suggests they could have gotten him for a very different deal than the one he took, or that the Blue Jays were willing to offer him. Reports have now indicated that Bichette is looking to opt out of his remaining two-year deal after this season, with an average salary of about $42 million.
One former general manager pushed back on that idea, however, saying there's no chance any team in the league will give Bichette that much money.
“I really can't imagine why any executive would think that the season he's having would be worthy of opting out, considering that he's going to walk away from so much money that he's not going to find in free agency from anybody else. Nobody's going to give him $40 million a year. Nobody is going to give him $30 million a year. In fact, I don't think anybody's going to give him $20 million a year,” said Steve Phillips, per MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on X.
I understand what Phillips is trying to say here, and I don't think it's crazy to say that he won't get $40 or $30 million.
However, this is still a guy like Bichette that we're talking about. If he goes for just $20 million a year, nearly every team in Major League Baseball is going to be interested in signing him, and it wouldn't even be crazy to suggest that the Blue Jays should get involved once again.
