What is an ambitious but reasonable goal for the Atlanta Falcons this season? Most analysts would probably say a modest win-loss improvement to 9 or 10 wins and an NFC South championship. We feel that their record is nowhere near as important this season as making long-term progress.

Specifically, the Falcons absolutely have to find and establish the franchise quarterback they have been looking for ever since Matt Ryan left five years ago.

Now in a front office role, Ryan will help Atlanta decide who its next QB1 will be - and doing so is the only true answer to being the Falcons' dream scenario this year, per Brad Gagnon at Bleacher Report.

"An already explosive offensive core finally gets its answer under center as the competition between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. produces a true franchise quarterback and lifts Atlanta to the NFC South crown."

To review, the Falcons have a solid offensive line. In Bijan Robinson they have an elite running back with the potential to be an all-time great at the position. With Drake London they have a legitimate star receiver and Kyle Pitts is finally starting to live up to his status as a top-five pick.

Aside from a steady hand at quarterback, the only thing that's missing from this picture is an offensive playcaller who knows how to get the most out of this supremely-talented but underachieving group.

Tommy Rees is the new offensive coordinator for the Falcons, and how well he does his job and caters the scheme to either Michael Penix or Tua Tagovailoa will go a long way towards deciding this all-important battle.
