The Boston Celtics are among the favorites to land the Milwaukee Bucks' disgruntled superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
As much as Celtics fans love 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, there is an argument to be made that the only available player who increases their likelihood to win more championships is Antetokounmpo.
Many analysts and writers, myself included, have pitched this trade as an option Boston should explore this offseason. Famous Boston sports fan turned media personality, Bill Simmons, addressed the topic on his podcast, but said the team is firmly out on any deal for the former league MVP.
"I keep saying it, I don't think Boston is in on Giannis," Simmons said.
"I certainly have not sensed any great urgency from them to break up their team," respected insider Zach Lowe responded.
"I think the reason to trade Jaylen would be to not want to have two 70 million dollar guys in two years," Simmons said.
For what it's worth, Simmons seems to be speaking purely from instinct as opposed to passing information from sources.
I will push back on his stance that the Celtics would be opposed to paying two supermax deals. Team owner Bill Chisholm did not buy the team to cut costs. The reigning NBA Coach of the Year, Joe Mazzulla, has proved that he is capable of working with the reigning NBA Executive of the Year, Brad Stevens, to build a low-cost, impactful lineup around the two cap eaters.
The Celtics are lucky that the NBA does not allow its superstars to demand an even larger portion of the cap. Boston is more than capable of paying two or three All-Stars.
