The dude changes his QBs like socks. O'Brian will go to his version of Patriots offensive system this offseason with Deshaun Watson. Texans should hire Pat Shurmur. I think Shurmur is a great fit for Deshaun Watson.

Comes across the feed today that Bill O'Brien is the top candidate to replace BA.

Now if your O'Brien why would you leave the Texans?

He wouldn’t be leaving the Texans of his own volition. They are planning to FIRE him. I think there has always been bad blood between him & their GM. O’Brien is a very good coach who learned under Belicheck. He was phenomenal at Penn State under impossible conditions. Give him a QB, and he’s as good as any HC in the league. If BA does leave, I would LOVE this hire.

Why would they fire him the team was rolling until the injuries not his fault his young QB got hurt and he lost the best defensive player in the league

Although I don't really follow Texans football unless Jessica Kylie is wearing the team clothes.

With DeSean Watson saying that he hopes to be coached by O'Brien the rest of his career, it would be very difficult for the Texans to ignore Watson's wishes. With what the Texans gave up to draft Watson, and in light of Watson's very good showing as a rookie, wouldn't it be absurd of them to make a coaching change?

What's surprising to me about this report is that typically the Cardinals keep their outlooks to themselves. Secondly, it borders on tampering to express interest in a coach who is currently employed. Thirdly, these types of reports may further push BA to stay...perhaps mainly because he wouldn't want to leave his staff in the lurch, knowing that the Cardinals would want to look elsewhere for a new HC and coaching staff, and not from within as BA has hoped all along.

maybe... the leaks were intentional so that BA gets a clear message. Some of your coaches have to go,...or all of them have to go.

Not so sure of that. It's not MB's or SK's style to leak inside info to anyone.

if anything I wonder if they already know BA is going to retire and have put out some early feelers on a few candidates.

I tend to agree. But sometimes when a parent keeps trying to get a child to do a certain thing and the child steadfastly refuses,...said parent adopts new tactics in search of what may work.
the only step left is to bounce his kangol off the wall a few times and hurl his geriatric arse into the pit of misery for the entire off season.

Bill O'Brien said he'd coach the Texans next season without receiving a contract extension. O'Brien has one year remaining on the five-year contract he signed in 2014.

makes sense... those are his guys...if Houston dont want him, one more season with his guys is a good gamble... better to hit the market after a good season rather than a bad one

O'Brien didn't do himself or the team any favors yesterday by passing from the shotgun on 3rd and 4th down with the ball six inches from the goal-line. The 4th down pass was intercepted, so the Steelers got the ball at the 20 yard line.

Mitch, in some ways I do agree with you, but I don’t know if it would be absurd. Albert Breer has a weekly column, and among other things he touched on this very subject this week.

It’s seeming less and less likely that the Texans’ football hierarchy will return intact in 2018. That’s the final year of coach Bill O’Brien’s deal, and it’s hard to imagine the team would go into it with that unresolved and the relationship between coaching and scouting what it is now. If he’s available, there’s little question that O’Brien would vault to the top of many teams’ lists.

So apparently there is some problems between O’Brien and the scouting department, and I have read somewhere else that it is in fact between O’Brien and their general manager, Rick Smith. I simply don’t know if you try to keep your quarterback happy or your scouting department. I mean, obviously a young stud quarterback is extremely important to any team, but if your scouting department does not function the way it should, chances are your team won’t be successful.

Of course, when Watson, J.J. Watt and edge rusher Whitney Mercilus returns from injury next year, I think the Texans is an obvious Super Bowl-contender, so they might simply agree to give it one last shot before going separate ways when O’Brien’s contract expires after the season.

Finally, I would like to echo what Ohcrap75 wrote earlier in this thread which is how O’Brien took an almost impossible job at Penn State, and he managed to lead them through the worst years in the history of the school while being more successful on and off the field than anyone could imagine. It is obviously debatable, but to me, those two years is the best coaching job ever, or at least in the years I have followed the sport. Honestly, I am not sure what being a great college coach says about him being a NFL coach but his job at Penn State must speak volume in some ways, also regarding working in the NFL.

if the Cards have to replace Bruce, they could do a lot worse than Bill Obrien

The Texans brass knows where Bill O’Brien stands, and so tomorrow’s meeting with ownership with be vital. Some major decisions need to be made.
