Wasn't the reason that we couldn't that cat from Pittsburgh last year was because he had a year left on his contract? If so, bring him in, move Davis back to LB coach.

McFadden is horrible. He should be thanking the football god's that he makes $5 million a year. And yeah, horrible "scheme" by Davis. This defense has way too much talent to play this pathetic. Edge pass rushers are definitely needed. A big L O L to the people trying to say our pass rush was good. I bet half of our sacks this season were from the QB's holding the ball too long.

Last two games are magnifying the situation. Lets look at this as a whole. Time to put people back into reality.

Points per game -
2008 - 26.6
2009 - 20.3

Pass attempts per sack -
2008 - 16.68
2009 - 13.79

Passer Rating allowed -
2008 - 96.9
2009 - 76.4

The three worst aspects of our defense last year were drastically improved under Davis.

Davis was apart of the D melt down in this playoffs but lets lay the blame where it needs to be laid. Davis doesn't miss tackles. If our D decided to make even half of their missed tackles these last two games we would have seen a huge difference in outcome.

No kidding!!!! If we are talking about firing someone, how about Wilson after he allowed Shockey to catch that TD pass when Shockey was basically running on one leg? How about Dockett completely disappearing during the game? We had our second and third string players in the secondary all day and the whole front 7 were giving Brees as much time as he needed. When you have a defensive breakdown of this magnitude, your star players have to step up and make game changing plays. Not only did that not happen, they contributed to the mayhem with sloppy tackling.

This team was obviously tired and after the emotional swings of last weeks game, they just didn't have enough left in the tank to handle an offense like the Saints have. We got beat. It happens. Instead of trying to place blame, lick your wounds, gather your troops and plan for the next battle. Improvements will be made over the off-season just as they were last year. This team is a work in progress and it sure is a hell of a lot better than what we used to have. Kudos to the coaches and players for giving us some of the most exciting games ever played in this sport.

What was our defense ranked this year and what was it ranked last year?

Who would be the most responsible for making sure our defense tackles properly?

2008 = 28th, 2009 = 14th

The players are responsible. These guys have been playing football for 10+ years, they already know how to tackle, its up to them to do it, and its up to the DC to put them in the right place to make the tackle they already know how to do.

I already answered that - "Last two games are magnifying the situation. Lets look at this as a whole."

16 games of which we drastically improved in our worst categories in 2008, does not get thrown out the window because of 2 games the players decided to stop tackling.

Exactly Joe. What you said earlier was spot on. DC put the players in the situation to tackle. There was ALWAYS a player around the ball but they just couldn't wrap guys up. I think anybody who is super upset needs to be greatful. Just this year we got to watch an awesome dismataling of the Vikings, we watched probably the best football game in playoff history (a week before this game). Honestly, I think if Green Bay beat us in overtime last week, the same thing happens to them that happened to us this week. Guys were dead all day long. The Saints were just on a whole other level of energy yesterday. But be greatfull for an awesome season.

It could be worse. We could be fighting about who we pick up with the #5 pick this year...

Davis will be back next year but there will be many changes in the defensive personnel. It will be our highest priority in the draft for sure. We will lose Dansby to free agency and with the "no cap" rules be allowed to sign one of equal value as we are one of the final 8 playoff teams. Doubt if there will be a free agent player of equal value. Aged players like Berry and Okeafor will be gone.
Get ready for change.

The stats improved but the main defensive problems didn't. Poor tackling and pass defense. Sure the numbers went down but the D was still giving up huge leads and the tackling was poor from day one.

Also I firmly believe that when you see a lot of missed tackles it is because the defenders were not in the right position in many cases so they can't use proper form or make a solid hit. Our DBs continually diving into the turf next to the ball carrier being the exception.

The D got toasted for over 350 yards passing 5 times. Last season only once. That Vince Young threw for 387 makes it even worse.

The run defense wasn't as good either keeping alive the long standing Cardinal tradition of letting a second tier RB have a career day when Maurice Morris of the Lions ran for 126 and Justin Forsett gained 123.

The Cards allowed 6 RBs to go over 100 yards three of them over 150. Only 3 backs got 100 on the Cards last season and two of those came in the no show games vs the Eagles and Vikings. Peterson was the only back to go over 125 yards.

Again I like Bill Davis especially what he did with the LBs in 2007 but I just think he was in over his head as DC.

Then we'll agree to disagree. The Vikings, Packers, etc. all said the defenses we ran were things so out of the ordinary that they didn't know what to do and Farve has played for YEARS. When Davis' schemes are run correctly its a thing of beauty. When we play against 4-5 reciever sets, we get BURNED. We do NOT have the players to cover these guys. I think if you expect a new DC to take these same guys and shut down Drew Bree's, you're nuts.

You have to consider a few things there. First of all the sample size. 6 games over two seasons doesn't tell anything about trends. Second of all GB and NO were better offenses than any we faced last year IMO. Third and finally, we had injuries hurting us. Lack of depth behind Hayes, DRC and Rolle did not help us at all. Yes Toler played nicely but any DB getting hurt just means more Adams and Brown on the field in multi-WR formations.

Take some time away from these too games, let the emotion cool down and you should see if you use any logic that Davis was no worse than Pendy over the course of the season.

Not that I am defending him but the defense only allowed 83 points this offseason...7 was on the special teams.

What an awful mess the defense was this postseason. The DC has to take some blame for that....sure we need better players but the coach is expected to have them prepared and it didn't appear they were prepared either game.
