With training camp drawing closer, we will be highlighting the one big question that faces each of the Indianapolis Colts' position groups.
Next up are the tight ends, with our focus on Tyler Warren. So...
Warren's rookie year was a resounding success. He finished the year as one of the more productive tight ends in football, catching 76 passes for 817 yards with four touchdowns. He was named a Pro Bowler as well.
But simply looking at Warren's production in the passing game doesn't highlight the all-encompassing impact he has on this offense.
His ability to help in the run game and his versatility add a level of unpredictability to the offense because he is able to wear so many different hats. This provides Shane Steichen with greater flexibility as he puts together game plans and can open up opportunities not only for Warren but for his teammates.
But as good as Year 1 was for Warren, there has been a particular point of emphasis for him this offseason -- maintaining separation throughout his routes. This will help create more explosive plays.
“For me, the big thing is the explosion out of my breaks," Warren said via The Athletic's James Boyd. "Getting into the break is one thing, but being able to accelerate out of it and still -- you create that space, but being able to hold that space is really big. But really when it comes down to all of the little fundamentals, I think is the biggest thing in this league. Everyone is so good, you gotta have everything you're doing to the T and perfect."
The continuity of being in Shane Steichen's offense for a second season could also contribute to a Year 2 jump. Rather than learning a new scheme, which was the case last offseason, Warren and Steichen can build upon what's been established.
The opportunity to further build his rapport with Daniel Jones could faciliate a leap as well.
“Certainly expect him to be a big part of the offense again, and he’s making a jump on what was a really, really good rookie season,’’ Jones said, via Mike Chappell of FOX59.
